Classic Sausage Gravy

Ingredients:

1 pound breakfast sausage (mild or spicy)

2 tablespoons butter

¼ cup all-purpose flour

2½ cups whole milk (more as needed)

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions:

1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage, breaking it into small pieces, until fully browned.

2. Add the butter, then sprinkle in the flour. Stir to coat the sausage and cook for 1 to 2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.

3. Gradually add the milk while stirring constantly.

4. Continue to stir for 5 to 7 minutes until the gravy thickens.

5. Season with salt, pepper, and any optional spices.

6. If the gravy becomes too thick, add a little more milk to reach your preferred consistency.

7. Serve immediately over warm biscuits.
