Ingredients
For the steak:
1½ lbs flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tsp cornstarch
½ tsp baking soda (optional, for tenderness)
1 tbsp vegetable oil
For the sauce:
2 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp oyster sauce
1 tbsp hoisin sauce (optional, for a hint of sweetness)
1 tsp sesame oil
2 tsp cornstarch
½ cup beef broth or water
1 tsp sugar
Black pepper to taste
Vegetables:
1 large onion, sliced into wedges
1–2 bell peppers (green and red), sliced
2 garlic cloves, minced
1-inch piece of ginger, grated
Instructions
1. Marinate the beef:
In a bowl, combine sliced beef with soy sauce, cornstarch, and baking soda. Let marinate for 15–30 minutes.
2. Make the sauce:
In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, cornstarch, broth, sugar, and black pepper. Set aside.
3. Sear the beef:
Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large wok or skillet over high heat. Sear the beef in batches (don’t overcrowd), cooking for 1–2 minutes until browned. Remove and set aside.
4. Stir-fry the veggies:
In the same pan, add a little more oil if needed. Stir-fry garlic, ginger, onions, and bell peppers for about 3–4 minutes, until crisp-tender.
5. Combine and cook:
Return beef to the pan. Stir in the sauce and cook for 2–3 minutes, until the sauce thickens and coats everything. Let it sizzle!
6. Serve hot:
Serve immediately over steamed rice or noodles. Garnish with sesame seeds or green onions if desired.
