Ingredients
2 medium onions
1 tablespoon paprika
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup milk (or buttermilk for extra flavor)
1 egg
1 cup breadcrumbs (panko for extra crunch)
Cooking spray or oil (for crispiness)
Instructions
1. Prep the Onions:
Peel onions and cut off the top (leave the root intact).
Make 4 cuts downwards, evenly spaced, not cutting through the root. Then make 3–4 more cuts in between each section to create “petals.” Gently spread the layers apart.
2. Soak (optional):
Soak the onions in cold water for 30 minutes to help them bloom open.
3. Make the Breading Station:
In one bowl, mix flour with paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
In another bowl, whisk egg and milk.
In a third bowl, add breadcrumbs.
4. Coat the Onions:
Dip each onion in the flour mix, making sure to get in between the petals.
Then dip into the egg-milk mixture.
Finally, coat thoroughly with breadcrumbs.
5. Air Fry:
Preheat air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
Spray the onions generously with cooking spray.
Air fry cut-side up for 12–15 minutes, or until crispy and golden brown.
Dipping Sauce Idea:
Mix together:
1/4 cup mayo
1 tablespoon ketchup
1 teaspoon hot sauce or horseradish
Pinch of paprika
