Ingredients:

1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey)

1 medium onion, finely chopped

1/2 cup green bell pepper, finely chopped (optional)

2–3 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup ketchup

1 tablespoon tomato paste (optional, for richer flavor)

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon yellow mustard

1 tablespoon brown sugar (adjust to taste)

Salt and black pepper to taste

1/4 to 1/3 cup water (to loosen the sauce if needed)

Hamburger buns (for serving)

Optional: shredded cheese, pickles, or coleslaw for topping

1. Cook the meat and veggies:

In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef (or turkey) and cook until browned, about 5–7 minutes.

Drain excess grease if needed.

Add the chopped onion (and bell pepper if using). Sauté for 3–4 minutes until softened.

Add minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.

2. Add the sauce:

Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and brown sugar.

Mix well, then add water to loosen the mixture to your desired consistency.

Season with salt and pepper to taste.

3. Simmer:

Reduce heat to low and let it simmer uncovered for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens.

4. Serve:

Spoon the sloppy joe mixture onto hamburger buns.

Add any optional toppings and serve warm.
