Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tbsp granulated sugar
1 tbsp aluminum-free baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 1/2 cups buttermilk (cold)
1 cup diced cooked ham
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (or your choice)
1 stick (1/2 cup) salted butter (melted, for pan)
Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C). Pour melted butter into an 8×8 or 9×9 inch baking dish and tilt to coat the bottom.
2. In a large bowl, whisk together:
Flour
Sugar
Baking powder
Baking soda
Salt
3. Stir in:
Diced ham
Shredded cheese
4. Add cold buttermilk and mix just until combined. The dough will be sticky.
5. Transfer dough to the buttered baking dish. Gently press it out evenly to the edges.
6. Use a greased knife to cut dough into 9 squares before baking (helps butter seep in).
7. Bake for 22–25 minutes, or until golden brown on top and a toothpick comes out clean.
8. Let rest for 5–10 minutes before serving. Optional: brush with more melted butter on top!
