Ingredients
1 lb ground beef
Salt and black pepper, to taste
2 tbsp butter
1 small onion, thinly sliced
1½ cups sliced mushrooms (cremini or white)
4 slices Swiss cheese
4 slices rye bread (or sourdough, your choice)
Optional: mayo or Dijon mustard for spreading
Instructions
1. Form the Patties:
Divide ground beef into 2–4 equal portions.
Form into oval patties, roughly the shape of your bread slices.
Season both sides with salt and pepper.
2. Cook the Mushrooms & Onions:
In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tbsp butter.
Add sliced onions and mushrooms.
Sauté for 6–8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden brown and tender.
Season lightly with salt and pepper, then remove from pan and set aside.
3. Cook the Patties:
In the same skillet, cook the beef patties over medium-high heat for 3–4 minutes per side, or until cooked through.
Add a slice of Swiss cheese on top of each patty during the last minute to melt.
4. Assemble the Patty Melt:
Butter one side of each bread slice.
On the unbuttered side of one slice, layer:
1 slice Swiss cheese → beef patty with melted cheese → mushroom & onion mixture → another slice of cheese → top with second bread slice (buttered side out).
5. Grill the Sandwich:
Wipe the skillet clean, then heat over medium.
Grill the sandwich 2–3 minutes per side until bread is golden and cheese is melted.
6. Serve:
Slice in half and enjoy hot!
