Ingredients:
1 cup granulated sugar
2/3 cup light corn syrup
1/4 cup unsalted butter
1/2 cup water
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 (0.13 oz) packet of Kool-Aid (any flavor)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)
Butter (for greasing hands/surface)
Instructions:
1. Prep a taffy surface:
Lightly butter a large baking sheet or marble slab. Also, grease your hands or wear gloves for pulling the taffy later.
2. Mix & heat:
In a heavy-bottomed saucepan, mix sugar, corn syrup, cornstarch, salt, Kool-Aid, butter, and water.
3. Cook the mixture:
Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring constantly until the sugar dissolves.
Then stop stirring and cook until the mixture reaches 250°F (firm ball stage) on a candy thermometer.
4. Add vanilla:
Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Be careful—it will bubble.
5. Pour & cool:
Pour the hot mixture onto your greased surface. Let it cool just enough to handle safely (about 10 minutes).
6. Pull the taffy:
Grease your hands and start pulling the taffy—stretch and fold repeatedly until the color lightens and the texture becomes firm but pliable (this may take 10–15 minutes).
7. Shape & cut:
Roll into ropes and cut into bite-sized pieces with greased scissors.
8. Wrap:
Dust lightly with powdered sugar if sticky, and wrap each piece in wax paper.
